I had quite an interesting weekend. Finally, after three long months of neglect, I decided to plant the four flowering Mandeville vines that had been patiently waiting for my attention on our lanai. Little did I know that this seemingly simple task would lead to some unexpected and profound realizations.
Before I could begin planting, I had to tackle the mess of tangled vines that had grown together over the past few months. Some were sturdy, others were delicate new growth, and there were even some dead, woody twists. As I worked in the warm breeze, memories from my childhood came flooding back. I vividly remember watching my father patiently untangling a massive mess of twine. Back then, I was just a little girl eager to get on with our project, and I couldn't understand why he didn't simply buy a new roll of twine. But now, as I carefully worked my way through the vine's delicate tips, I finally understood his explanation. Concentrating on a task that requires patience and effort can be incredibly centering. It takes you away from all-consuming thoughts and allows you to return with a clear mind to solve your problems once the task is completed. And let me tell you, completing a task brings a deep sense of gratification.
This detangling project took me a couple of hours. I painstakingly unwound the long tentacles that had intertwined themselves with neighboring vines. I cut away the dead vines and unraveled the tangles, gently coaxing the more mature parts of the vine to bend in ways they didn't want to go, all in order to avoid breaking and destroying the plant. I also guided the young, tender shoots that had grown unattended on my lanai, untwisting them from places they shouldn't be. Some of these shoots had even entwined themselves with some equally unattended weeds, but I freed them so they could grow as intended. Finally, I carefully arranged the vines onto the trellis over our swing so they would continue to grow in the right direction. And then, my friend, we sat on our swing, sipping refreshing cups of iced tea, admiring the vines, and imagining the vibrant colors that would come once the vines took solid root.
When I started this project on Saturday, I focused on completing another unfinished task with the "It begins now" mentality. However, gardening turned out to be more inspiring than I could have ever imagined. Apart from getting these beautiful plants growing where they were meant to be, I realized that things left unattended will continue on their own, often in ways we wouldn't desire. Only when we take control, cut away the dead and unproductive aspects that hinder our progress, and firmly direct our path can true growth and success be achieved.
Whether it's in business or any other aspect of life, the things we haven't yet addressed may prove more challenging and time-consuming to tackle. But when we pay close attention to encouraging the positive and removing the negative, the satisfaction and accomplishment that come with completing the task are well worth it.
It's funny how fulfilling one's own desires can ignite the motivation to take on more and realize the immense power in not waiting. So, my dear reader, what's your "IT" - the thing you've been putting off? Whatever it may be, remember that "IT begins now!"
